Background

Low Power Wide Area Networks (LP-WAN) are wireless technologies covering different Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The common characteristics for LPWANs are large coverage, low bandwidth, small data sizes and long battery life operation. One of these technologies include Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT/LTE-NB) developed and standardized by 3GPP [1A. Ratilainen, “NB-IoT characteristics draft-ratilainen-lpwan-nb-iot-00]

Project Description

In this project, the candidate will be involved in implementation and evaluation of LTE-NB. Firstly, the candidate will be involved in implementation of simulation. Secondly, the performance of NB-IoT will be compared with other LP-WAN wireless technologies such as LoRa or LTE-Cat M1.
Your Responsibilities:
Implementation basic features of NB-IoT in a simulator
Testing and evaluating the performance of LTE-NB compared with other LP-WAN
Thesis writing and documentation at IMEC-Holst Centre
(Optional) submit the work to a top-ranking publication

Duration: 6-9 months (starting from March/April 2017)

Requirements

You have a Bachelor degree in electrical engineering or computer science. You have a Master degree (or undergoing) in electrical engineering or computer science. You have experience with wireless network protocol and MAC protocols, TDMA, FDMA or OFDMA You have experience with LTE protocol stack (Optional) You have experience with network simulators. For example NS-2, NS-3, Omnet++, or Cooja Proven experience with C/C++ and Python
