This course discusses VLSI implementations of embedded systems with real time constraints. Typical examples are found in processing of speech, audio, telecom, graphics and video signals or in combination of those like in MPEG4. The emphasis is on efficient realisations in silicon with low power dissipation and a small area. The course focuses on the VLSI architectures.
The basic building blocks are embedded processors with different degrees of programmability: embedded CPUs and DSPs and application specific processors. Such embedded processors only occupy +/- 1 square mm. in current deep-submicron processes. Therefore these processors are combined in a multi-processor architecture where the key issue is on communication. The course is divided in 9 chapters.
