Install the software

In this step, the Hexeditor, Cygwin, and WinWave software packages will be installed. This is done by following the step-by-step the instructions on this page.
  1. Open an explorer window and go to the directory 'd:\mmips'.

  2. Double-click on the file 'install.bat' to start the installation script.

  3. The script start with installing the HDD Hex Editor. Click 'Next' to continue the installation.

  4. Accept the license and click 'Next' to continue.

  5. Start the actual installation by clicking on the 'Install' button.

  6. Click on the 'Finish' button to end the Hex Editor installation.

  7. The next program to be installed is Cygwin. Cygwin is a UNIX environment for Windows. It consists of two parts: a DLL (cygwin1.dll) which acts as a UNIX emulation layer providing substantial UNIX API functionality, and a collection of tools, ported from UNIX, which provide UNIX/Linux look and feel.

Press 'Next' to continue the installation.

  8. We are going to download the files from the internet. Press 'Next' to continue.

  9. You must now set the local root directory. You do not have to change the default values, but make sure that the default text file type is Unix. Press 'Next' to continue.

  10. You must now give a temporary directory for the Cygwin installation. The default suggestion (d:\mmips\cygwin\) can be used.

  11. We use a direct connection for the download.

  12. Select a random download location.

  13. Cygwin will now download a small file. After which you must select all packages that must be installed. You can use the default settings, but you must add some extra packages to make the software work. Make sure you select the following packages:

    • Devel/gcc
    • Devel/gcc-g++
    • Devel/make
    • Devel/byacc
    • Net/openssh
    • Net/openssl
    • Shells/tcsh

  14. When you click 'Finish' after selecting all packages, a warning may appear (see screenshot below) that some packages are added to resolve some dependencies. When this happens just click 'Next' to continue. Else, you can immediately proceed to the next step.

  15. After the installation is complete, you click 'Next' to create a desktop icon and start menu entry. This completes the cygwin installation.

  16. The installation script now adds a small file to the windows register. This makes it possible to view .vcd files with the WinWave viewer.
